Full Itinerary of this 6-Day Gorilla and Chimpanzee Safari Uganda

Day 1:Pick up and Transfer to Kibale National Park

Your safari begins with a pick-up from your hotel or airport in Kampala, followed by a transfer to Kibale National Park, located in western Uganda. The journey, which takes approximately 4-5 hours, offers breathtaking views of the Ugandan countryside, with stops along the way for lunch and other necessities. Upon arrival at Kibale National Park, you will check into your lodge, Chimpanzee Forest Lodge or similar, and have the rest of the evening to relax and prepare for the next day’s chimpanzee trekking experience.

Day 2:Chimpanzee Trekking and Visit Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary

Following an early breakfast, you will be taken to the park headquarters for a briefing on the rules and regulations of chimpanzee trekking. Kibale National Park is renowned for its impressive population of chimpanzees, making it an ideal location for tracking these amazing primates. As you trek through the dense forest, you will have the opportunity to spot other primates, including colobus monkeys, red colobus, and red-tailed monkeys. After lunch, you will visit the Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary, where you will embark on a guided walk around the swamp, providing you with the opportunity to see a wide range of flora and fauna, including butterflies, birds, and other insects.

Day 3:Transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park for Boat Cruise and Evening Game Drive

After breakfast, you will transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park, located in southwestern Uganda. The drive, which takes approximately 4 hours, offers stunning views of the Rwenzori Mountains and the vast savannah plains. Upon arrival, you will check into your lodge, Twin Lake Safari Lodge or similar, and have lunch. In the afternoon, you will embark on a boat cruise on the Kazinga Channel, providing you with the opportunity to see a variety of wildlife, including elephants, buffaloes, hippos, and crocodiles. Following the boat cruise, you will go on an evening game drive, where you will see more wildlife and experience the breathtaking sunset over the savannah plains.

Day 4:Transfer to Bwindi through Ishasha sector for Tree-Climbing Lions

After breakfast, you will transfer from Queen Elizabeth National Park to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest through the Ishasha sector. During this transfer, you will have the chance to see lions climbing trees, a unique and rare occurrence. These lions are the only ones in the world known to climb trees, making this experience truly unforgettable. The drive will take approximately 4-5 hours, with stops along the way for lunch and other necessities. Upon arrival at Bwindi, you will check into your lodge, Bakiga Lodge or similar, and have the rest of the evening to relax and prepare for the next day’s gorilla tracking adventure.

Day 5: Gorilla Tracking in Bwindi

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is home to over half of the world’s remaining gorillas and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Following a briefing by a trained guide on the rules and regulations of gorilla tracking, as well as the safety precautions to take while in the forest, you will embark on a challenging but rewarding hike through the dense jungle in search of the gorillas. The hike can last anywhere from a few hours to a full day, depending on the location of the gorillas on that particular day. Upon finding the gorillas, you will have the opportunity to observe them for an hour, during which time you can watch them interact with each other, feed, and play.

Day 6: Transfer back to Kampala

After breakfast, you will transfer back to Kampala, a journey that takes approximately 8-9 hours, with stops along the way for lunch and other necessities. Upon arrival in Kampala, you will be dropped off at your hotel, marking the end of your amazing safari experience.
